- Title
A review of catastrophic failures of bulk liquid storage tanks.
- Authors
Thyer, A. M.; Jagger, S. F.; Atherton, W.; Ash, J. W.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the issues concerning the failures of bulk liquid storage tanks in 1919 to 2004. It states that the UK Health and Safety Executive has already sponsored several projects that focused on experimental and modelling investigations into total tank removal. Meanwhile, the authors note that the possibility of multiple tank failures is sometimes discounted on the grounds that the failure of two tanks must be improbable. In connection, a summary of historical tank failure incidents is also presented in the article including molasses in Boston, Massachusetts, sulphuric acid in West Indies and fuel oil in the Netherlands.
