- Title
AUDEN'S THE DOUBLE MAN.
- Authors
Stewart, James C. Q.
- Abstract
The article critically appraises the book "The Double Man," by W.H. Auden. Auden drew abuse on himself for going to the U.S. early in 1939, at a crucial moment in English life, and his patriotism was much questioned. The likely source of Auden's title is a short poem by Richard Lovelace, which, itself untitled, is simply called "Another" on the theme of the poem preceding it, namely, "The Snayl." Auden would have reread Lovelace while preparing "The Oxford Book of Light Verse," which included work of several cavalier poets.
