- Abstract
Uterine Cervical Neoplasms (UCN) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Adequate knowledge and preventive behaviors are key to reducing its incidence and mortality. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge of risk factors and preventive practices for ucn among women attending a health center in Paraíba. Specific objectives included determining the participants' level of information about risk factors, examining their understanding and implementation of prevention practices, investigating the influence of sociodemographic variables on access to information and prevention, and analyzing the relationship between knowledge and prevention practices. This was a cross-sectional field study of a quantitative nature. A structured questionnaire was administered to a convenience sample in a health center, resulting in 30 participants. Most of the participants had limited knowledge about risk factors and preventive practices for cervical cancer; 76% of the women had regular Pap smears. No significant association was found between access to information about cervical cancer and sociodemographic variables, nor between knowledge of risk factors and prevention (p > 0.05). However, there was an association between age group and having had a Pap smear (p < 0.05). Although there is a reasonable level of knowledge about some risk factors and preventive practices, the findings point to the need for educational efforts focused on raising awareness about prevention and risk factors against HPV.
