- Abstract
Given the increasing demand for automotive market-related services in Brazil, the fuel retailing activity has significantly expanded in recent years. This activity is potentially polluting and thus subject to environmental licensing. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate water and oil separators in fuel stations through the collection of effluent samples from the separator systems' outlets. Analytical results of the samples indicate that the separator systems exhibit good efficiency in removing settleable solids, as well as the removal of oils and greases present in the effluents. These results underscore the importance of installing these systems in fuel stations, as discharging untreated effluents into sewage networks can potentially damage sewage systems, sewage treatment plant installations, and even lead to contamination of receiving water bodies with treated sewage.
