- Title
USDA Beef Grading: A Failure in Consumer Information?
- Authors
Miller, John A.; Topel, David G.; Rust, Robert E.
- Abstract
The article reports on the grading system used to determine the product quality of beef products in the U.S. The author focuses on the effectiveness of the grading system used by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the implications for consumers experiencing the economic effects of inflation. It is suggested that the grading system is too complex and should be modified. The nutritional values of high and low meat grades are examined. Statements made by Hans Thorelli by way of comparing consumer information policies implemented by the governments of the U.S. and Sweden are analyzed.
