- Abstract
This article addresses the scope of trade negotiations between Ecuador and the European Union, within the framework of the Multiparty Agreement between the trade bloc, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador's subsequent accession to it. The analysis starts from the concept of competitiveness applied to the situation of Ecuador, in the midst of an economic crisis and high costs of non-competitiveness that could possibly affect the outcome of the Multiparty Trade Agreement that this country has signed with its Andean partners and the European Union. The aspects of the negotiation, its main characteristics, the achievements and the challenges derived from such adhesion are analyzed. Particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of the commitments derived from this agreement, compared to the market potential of 500 million consumers. The article addresses the potential unwanted risks that could arise from the application of such an agreement, affecting certain sectors that would not be able to cope with trade liberalization. The result to be obtained is to have elements for the analysis of Ecuador's competitive capacity, against a structure of costs of non- competitiveness, low productivity and little value added, which could reduce the benefits derived from the trade agreement. The conclusion is in which case there is a need to have an International Agenda - National Competitiveness Plan that supports the export sector in promoting its exports to the EU and the domestic producers to face European competition.
