- Abstract
Most Brazilian public schools do not perform any kind of waste treatment. Few schools seek solutions to today's environmental issues. This paper aims to characterize the solid waste of a state public school institution in the city of Barreiras/BA, in order to establish future sustainability proposals. This quali-quantitative research, developed by a case study a case study. The characterization of school solid waste comprised in the collection, conditioning, weighing and separation. It was found that the school produces daily average of 53.05 kg of solid waste, and in the detail of the physical composition of these wastes, organic represent 56%; another 10%; paper 26%; 4% plastic; and aluminum 4.0%. Overall, these values are considerable and require attention due to the environmental impacts that can be caused. These data confirm that there is a universalization of consumer society and urgent need for environmental education.
