Discusses the influence of Friedrich Nietzsche on the essay "On the Dream of the Red Chamber," by Wang Guowei, one of the foremost 20th century Chinese scholars of Western aesthetics as well as Chinese archeology, philology and history. Disagreement expressed by Wang to the life-negating ethics of Schopenhauer; Portrayal of Bao Yu which revealed distinctive character traits of the Nietzschean overman; Influence of Nietzche's views of tragedy on the essay.
