- Title
Candid choices: optimising patient selection in prostate cancer focal therapy.
- Authors
Sanchez‐Salas, Rafael
- Abstract
The article discusses the use of focal therapy (FT) for prostate cancer (PCa), which involves targeting and treating specific areas of clinically significant PCa within the prostate. FT aims to reduce side-effects associated with more aggressive treatments by focusing on the index lesion rather than the entire gland. The article highlights the importance of patient selection in achieving accurate results and discusses a study on focal high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for treating PCa. The study found that follow-up biopsies remain essential for detecting cancer recurrence, and the selection process for FT needs to be reassessed. The article also mentions the need for a more comprehensive evaluation of functional outcomes and quality of life in future experiences with FT. The article emphasizes the importance of accurate selection and rigorous follow-up in FT and suggests that multidisciplinary discussions can improve outcomes. However, it also notes that non-academic centers may not provide the same level of comprehensive assessment as described in the study.
