- Abstract
The article discusses the author's experience of trying to remove splinters from her daughter's palm. The author, a pediatrician, remarks on how motherhood has altered her social life. She discusses the story "The Use of Force," by William Carlos Williams. The author describes her growing frustration with her daughter and her husband, an oncologist, as she tries to remove the splinter. The author was unable to remove the splinters and blames her husband for not holding the baby daughter tight enough. When the author holds the child, the husband is able to remove the splinters at once.
