- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of carob seed concerning with hepatoprotective effect and antioxidant role against ethyl alcohol induced oxidative stress in rats. Twenty-four Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups (control, 20% alcohol, 15% seed and 15% seed + 20% alcohol). The hepatopreventive effect and antioxidant role of carob seed supplementation feed were assessed by measuring spectrophotometric level of serum liver damage enzymes, AST, ALT, LDH, ALB and TP levels; antioxidant defense systems (ADS), SOD, GSH-Px, GST, GR activities, GSH levels and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in the brain, kidney, spleen, erythrocytes, heart and liver tissues of rats. According to the findings of the study, while the levels of AST, ALT and LDH increased significantly (p< 0.05) in alcohol group, ALT and LDH were decreased significantly (p< 0.05) in seed + alcohol group. Also, while the value of MDA content increased in the all tissues except for the heart tissue in the alcohol group, they decreased significantly (p< 0.05) in the tissues of the seed + alcohol group. It was decided that carob seed's property of antioxidant against ethyl alcohol causes different effects on various tissues.
