- Abstract
The purpose of this literature review is to compile an evidence-based clinical guideline, which can be used in the process of improving the basis for decisions in relation to palliating dyspnea in terminally ill and dying patients with cancer. The systematic literature review was retrieved in The Cochrane Library, PubMed (MEDLINE), CINAHL, different Internet sites and by hand searching lists of references. Methodological quality of the studies was critically evaluated using checklists. A total of 17 studies were identified in the results. The studies included are generally vitiated by several method problems. However the results suggest that there is literature that could form the basis of a clinical guideline. The guideline may contain recommendations for use of pharmalogical interventions, treatment with oxygen and atmospheric air and non-pharmalogical interventions in relation to palliating dyspnea in terminally ill and dying patients with cancer. Furthermore the results show that further research is needed.
