- Title
The effect of motivation and manipulations thereof on motor learning: assessing the evidence.

- Abstract
The Optimizing performance through intrinsic motivation and attention for learning: The OPTIMAL theory of motor learning predicts that manipulations of learner autonomy and expectations for success increases learner motivation as well as improves their motor learning and performance. Our laboratory has conducted several large-sample size experiments testing this theory and generally failed to confirm its predictions. However, the experiments did provide some evidence that intrinsic motivation is associated with improved performance and, to a lesser extent, learning. This suggests that intrinsic motivation may be related to motor learning and performance, but the relationship may be weak and/or difficult to discern with our traditional experimental methods. Further, manipulating motivation via supporting autonomy and/or enhancing expectancies may yield inconsistent effects on motivation, possibly due to individual differences, consequently failing to reliably improve learning and performance.
