Editors' Perspective.
- Abstract
The article looks at the move of the members of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to develop a principles-based valuation system for life insurance in the U.S. The approach, views as the next solvency regulation, is aimed at life insurance reserves and capital, which might affect decisions on regulatory oversight and capital in other segments of the country's insurance industry. The approach to life insurance reserve regulations has been a formulaic one. Due to the use of conservative assumptions, the system tend to result in conservative reserve levels.
