- Abstract
The paper herein analyses the damping capability of highly compressible porous materials imbibed with water and subjected to impact loading using a pendulum drop test rig. Several porous materials imbibed with water have been tested on a crossed axis cylinder-on-cylinder contact configuration. The results were compared using various criteria, such as peak-acceleration and peak-force related to corresponding peak values obtained from an undamped impact between two metallic cylinders. The impact force was 2-3 times smaller when using imbibed porous materials between the impacting cylinders. The damping capacity was calculated by finite difference integration of the measured values of acceleration and impact force.
