- Authors
Havin, David J.
- Abstract
Rabbi Dr Simon Herman was St Kilda Hebrew Congregation's third chief minister, serving from 1959 until 1962, between Rabbis Jacob Danglow and Ronald Lubofsky. This article examines the factors that led to Rabbi Herman's departure from the congregation, centring upon the issue of cremation, forbidden by Jewish law, yet desired by a small minority of the members. Rabbi Danglow would conduct the pre-cremation service at the home of the deceased or at the funeral parlour, after which the cortège departed for the crematorium leaving the rabbi discretely behind, but Rabbi Herman was extremely reluctant to continue the practice. Returning to his native Britain, Rabbi Herman had a distinguished career ministering to a number of congregations and also becoming a member of the Beth Din of the Federation of Synagogues.
