- Abstract
The present study aims to investigate how the college degree improves the employability of lower income students. This inquiry was motivated, in one hand, in the findings of the research conducted in France, by Bourdieu (2007), who found that increasing the number of degrees tend to devalue them, not ensuring social mobility for their possessors. In another hand, the inquiry was also based in the findings of Schultz (1973a), which postulates that the years of study represents an individual investment which will improve the employability of their owners, in the future. To analyze the confrontation between these two views, a qualitative research was conducted with undergraduated students of a private institution that had full scholarship. The analysis suggests that, despite the proven disadvantages arising from the lowest social origin, access to higher education in a renowned university is configured as an important feature of increased cultural and social capital of their owners.
