- Abstract
The inhibitory effects of isoleucine, leucine, and valine singly and in combination on the activity of acetohydroxyacid synthetase has been determined using extracts of a range of higher plants. In all cases leucine and valine were significantly inhibitory on their own, but more inhibitory when supplied together. There is evidence that all the plants tested contain an acetohydroxyacid synthetase that is regulated by co-operative feedback by leucine and valine in a manner similar to that previously reported for barley. The possibility that the branched-chain amino acids could repress the synthesis of the enzyme was also tested, but no evidence for repression found.
