- Abstract
Confined water is a common type of groundwater in accumulation slopes and has several formation mechanisms. One such formation mechanism is transient confinement, wherein the groundwater level rises after heavy rainfall. The deformation and failure of slopes where such mechanisms occur are related to the pressure of the transiently confined water. To explore this mechanism, the relationships among groundwater level, confined water distribution, and pressure head for the Waishiting slope in China were studied by observation and mechanical analysis, and the failure characteristics of the slope were determined. The deformation and failure of the surface soil were found to be caused by the uplift of the confined water. This did not necessarily lead to landslides; however, it caused local bending or shear failure of the surface soil. For such slopes, drainage measures need to be used to reduce the pressure of the confined water. The results of this research can help in choosing a suitable treatment for these kinds of slope failure.
