- Abstract
The author reflects on the relevance of a policy for the care of older adults in the U.S. He cites the crisis posed by the shortage of geriatric medicine specialists in the country based on the limited number of students seeking careers in geriatrics or primary from 2007 to 2009. He enumerates six characteristics of optimal quality of care for older patients, such as having an extensive knowledge of the aging process. The author also discusses current U.S. policy initiatives that have the potential to enhance geriatric medicine.
