The article proposes routine service dog special monthly compensation as a disability benefit for U.S. veterans with service-connected disabilities. Topics discussed are history of service dog use by veterans, regulatory background and structure of the service dog benefit of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), alternative ways to pay service dog expenses such as California's Assistance Dog Special Allowance, and policy and budgetary implications of providing service dog benefit.
