- Title
Can One Be 'Gay' and French?
- Authors
Armbrecht, Thomas J. D.
- Abstract
The author discusses the French social model of universalism and identity politics in France. Frédéric Martel questions the idea of "gay pride" in his 1995 book, "The Pink and the Black." Martel's arguments have been consided homophobic, but they fall in line with the identity-based politics called communitarianism or particularism. France, which rejected communitarianism, is based on universalist ideals. The laissez-faire attitude has served and hindered GLBT people: they have been free to keep their sexuality out of the public sphere. However, they are missing an essential part of modern queer identity.
