- Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between feeding with alternative milk in nursing bottle and caries in children of 1 to 4 years old. Material and Method: The study was carried aut in a medical clinic of IMSS at Puebla City. From june-august 1999 cases with nursing bottle caries (ages 1 to 4 years) were compared to healthy controls of the same age. Children's dental health was evaluated through clinical examination and a questionnaire. Results: 62 patients with nursing bottle caries and 118 caries free subjects were recruited. The average age was 2.94 ± 1.01 and 2.08 ± 1.05 years for each group. Forty seven of the 62 patients with nursing bottle caries, were fed with alternative milk in nursing bottle and 15 were breast fed. Fifty nine of the 118 healthy controls were fed with breast feeding. The odds ratio was 3.13 [95% Cl 1.5-6.5), the fisher test was of p = 0.0006. Two hundred and sixty eight decay teeth were found of which 28% were are maxillary central incisor. Conclusions: Alternative milk in nursing bottles increases 3 times the risk to developnursing bottle caries. The results was significants in the children with caries and substitutes of milk feeding bottle, p = 0.0006.
