- Abstract
Narrative Production of Meanings: Exploring the Work of Stories in Social Life By Donileen R. Loseke (Lexington Books, 2019) The central premise of I Narrative Production of Meanings i by Donileen Loseke is that the study of narratives is an endeavor more important to social science than ever before as the western world becomes more heterogeneous, atomistic, and contested. In the first chapter, Loseke provides the reader with the historical foundation of narrative analysis noting how the social sciences have ignored narrative analysis in the past and only recently have come to understand its importance. In this chapter, the author also aptly uses the narrative of the "American Dream" to illustrate how cultural codes are structured within narratives and how narratives serve as a mode of their perpetuation.
