- Abstract
The debate over the etymological origin of the word "Cossack" has become a serious problem that has come to this day due to the imprecise rhetoric of the last few centuries. O'Rurke's explanation of "nothing illustrates better the complexity and density of cultural exchange that went on in the steppe than the name Cossack itself" really hints at scientists that the subject has hard boundaries. In fact, the debate about the etymological origin of the Cossack name itself is also a manifestation of the ongoing complexity about Cossack ethnography. Because today there are more than one ethnic element on the world that defines itself as Cossack. The question of how these people, who are different from each other in ethnic, religious and linguistic terms, have proudly adopted the name "Cossack" for centuries without any doubt in their roots, constitutes the first step of this mysterious journey full of unknowns. This study, which we investigate the etymological roots of the "Cossack" name, allows us to witness the enormous impact of lifestyle on identity building.
