- Abstract
The study investigated the perceived political causes of family conflict and impact of family conflict on family welfare in Edo State, data were collected, by means of validated questionnaire from 120 respondents, randomly sampled from the three senatorial district of Edo State. This study adopted descriptive survey design, entailing seeking information or opinion of persons sampled from a population. The population for this study was made up of the families in the three senatorial districts of Edo State namely, Edo South, North and Central, they comprised of adult population of 18 years and above. The pooled result reveals that the level of interest (mean=3.08) non interest (mean=2.75) in political matters and in political arguments (mean=3.14) crisis on the family on who should be the final decision maker in the home (2.90). crisis from active political participation in political (3.11) and political associations (2.95) family conflict impacts on family welfare which borders on social, economically, and health wise, with spillover effect on the wider society, incessant family crisis produce social disharmony in the home (92.6%) and breed disagreement (90.9%); cause frustration (77.7%) affects the family life style (85.8%) and constrains effective utilization of family resources (83.5%) cause ill health (80.9%) and in rare cases leads to physical injury or even death 75.8%. the study concludes that political factors is one of the factors that causes conflicts in the family and that family conflict affects family welfare. The study recommends among others. Mass media such as radio and television should be employed by both government and private agencies or NGO's, to inform to public on the impact of political factors on family conflict and impact of conflict on family welfare.
