- Abstract
From October 1,2008 through November 29, 2012, the San Diego State University, Rehabilitation Counseling Program and the Exceptional Family Resource Center administered Project Pendleton. Project Pendleton was directed toward Marine Corps families stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton who had children with developmental disabilities. This article describes Project Pendleton, its formation and implementation, challenges faced, practice recommendations, and implications for policy and training. Specific attention is focused on how Project Pendleton established military and community partnerships, utilized effective tools such as person-centered planning, and worked within the culture of the Marine Corps. Recommendations are offered for rehabilitation counselors who work with military families, based on lessons learned during this project. While many strategies that are effective with all families who have children with disabilities also work for military families, unique factors should be taken into consideration when engaging with families who have active service members while caring for children with disabilities.
