- Abstract
Egg quality parameters of two Macrobrachium species (M. rosenbergii and M. tenellum) were evaluated testing three brood stock diets. The experimental diets were as follows: a) 100% natural food, b) natural food complemented with a commercial peletized diet plus Artemia biomass boosted with a commercial lipid emulsion, and c) a domestic peletized diet. Despite the differences in protein content of the diets, there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in the number of spawnings among diets, egg number, egg dry weight and egg volume for M. tenellum. For M. rosenbergii, differences (P < 0.05) were only detected in the number of eggs per spawning, registering the highest amount for the control diet (33,978). Differences between the two species for all the quality parameters were based in the female size variation. Due to the egg eliptic-shape, it is suggested the study of the egg volume as a reliable quality parameter instead of its the diameter.
