- Title
Attitudes and Motivation: Their Role in Second-Language Acquisition.
- Authors
Gardner, R. C.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the study of the role of parents in acquiring second language. Most of the research that is conducted is not related to English as a second language, but can be applied to English just as much as to any other second language. The parents play both "active" and "passive" roles in the learning of second language by their wards. The active and conscious participation of the parents in the process is their "active" role. The parent's attitude towards the community whose language their ward is learning, also plays an important role. Parents are unaware of this "passive" role they play. Disparity in language aptitude is a reason for the disparity in the degree to which the student learns second language skills. Disparity in acquisition of skills required for communication in second language depends on motivational differences.
