The article presents an overview of the artwork of the Dutch-American Willem de Kooning during the second half of the 1950s. Introductory details are given describing the broad characteristics and aesthetics of de Kooning's artwork, focusing on the genre of his "action painting" utilizing themes of driving, highways and automobiles. A timeline is then provided outlining the various trends and changes in de Kooning's output in the United States. Several individual works are cited and analyzed in turn.
