- Abstract
This article informs that merino sheep can be divided into two genetic groups distinguished by the concentrations of sodium and potassium in the erythrocytes, one group low in sodium and high in potassium (HK) the other high in sodium, low in potassium (LK). The biochemical differences underlying the two erythrocyte types have been the subject of intense study in recent years and high correlations have been found between the pump flux of sodium and potassium and the activity of sodium-potassium activated, ouabain-sensitive adenosine triphosphatase in HK and LK erythrocytes.
