- Abstract
The issue of greenhouse gas emissions (the so-called carbon footprint) related to inhalers used in medicine is presented. Pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) with HFA 134a propellant (all on the Polish market) have the largest carbon footprint, followed by metered dose liquid inhaler (MDLI) and dry powder inhalers (DPIs). All types of inhalers should be available, as there are groups of patients who cannot use DPI. Caution is advised and the use of current medical knowledge is recommended when replacing pMDI inhalers with DPI in patients with asthma or COPD. An efficient and safety recycling system for inhalers of all types is needed.
