- Abstract
The increase in the number of Common Buzzards (Buteo buteo) in the Náchod district, Hradec Králové region, in the 1970s and 80s resulted in a noticeable expansion of breeding pairs into the non-forest environment of floodplains of the lower reaches of the Úpa and Metuje rivers, characterized by little forest cover but a rich representation of woody species in non-forest formations, a high proportion of meadows and perennial fodder crops and a minimal proportion of maize and rapeseed. Nests were searched there in March and April before the trees were leaved out, and then their occupancy by the Common Buzzard was verified as necessary. In the year 1990, 53 breeding pairs/100 km² were found there. After 1990, however, more than 40% of the meadows were gradually plowed up in this area, and at the same time, the share of crops unsuitable for Common Voles, the main food source of buzzards, increased several times. Despite the overall decrease in the number of Common Buzzards in the Náchod district by 10– 20% and the permanent decrease in the biodiversity of the agricultural landscape, a density of 56 breeding pairs/100 km² was found in the monitored river floodplains in 2021. Even after unfavorable changes in farmland, river floodplains remain the most suitable environment for Common Buzzards in the Náchod district, thanks to the preservation of a suitable combination of habitat and food conditions.
