- Abstract
Hypertension is considered a public health problem worldwide. For clinical practice be in line with the most current scientific evidence, guidelines on the management of this disease must be frequently updated. Over the past 17 years, 3 guidelines about hypertension treatment were published in the United States. The most significant changes on the management of this disease during this period are the following: hypertension categories were modified; the goal blood pressure for patients with chronic kidney disease and diabetes mellitus have changed; specific goal blood pressure were instituted for patients > 60 years; the first-line drugs for hypertension treatment were updated. This paper analyzes changes since the JNC 6, guideline published in 1997, up to the JNC 8, published in 2014.
