- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To relate motor performance to academic performance of children aged from seven to 10 years. METHODS: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study, composed of 680 elementary school students in the city of São José (SC). Children were assessed using the Motor Test and the Movement Assessment Battery Checklist for Children Second Edition - MABC-2. School performance was verified through the individual school report, provide by the school, from which the concepts attributed to students in the subjects of Portuguese Language and Mathematics were used. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences - SPSS version 20.0 for Windows was used for data analysis and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test was performed. Utilizou o Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS versão 20.0 para Windows para análise de dados e realização de teste de normalidade de Kolmogorov-Smirnov. For descriptive statistics, media tests, medians, frequencies and standard deviations, maximum and minimum, were performed. For inferential analysis, Mann-Whitney U tests were used to verify difference between groups, and Chi-Square and Pearson tests to verify association between groups and residual adjustment for an association trend, in addition to logistic regression. The significance level of 5% was considered. RESULTS: Children with poor academic performance in portuguese, showed higher averages in the skills of personal care (1.69±1.99; p=0.012), in the classroom (1.78±2.16; p=0.002) and recreational/physical education (1.80±2.11; p=0.028), in stable environments. In a dynamic environment there was a difference in the averages only in the skills of personal care/classroom (Portuguese: 2.70±2.56; p=0.001; Mathematics: 2.64±2.55; p=0.003). CONCLUSION: Children with low performance in daily activities are more likely to show low academic performance.
