- Abstract
The midwife-led unit (MLU), which sits alongside the consultant-led unit (CLU) in Ayrshire Central Hospital, was opened In 1995. Since then 10 000 women have been admitted to MLU accounting for 41% of the total number of women admitted to ACH in spontaneous labour. Over the ten years there has been an increase in the admissions to the MLU, which has mainly been due to the relaxation of the admission criteria and on going developments for this option of care. Around 90% of all admissions to the MLU achieve a spontaneous vaginal birth with 5% resulting in LUSC and 6% in an instrumental delivery. Obstetric involvement averages 4.4% and paediatric involvement ranges between 7 and 10 % of all deliveries within the MLU.
