- Abstract
The change in mechanical properties due to low temperatures and the associated damage are studied for various metals. Cracks in austenitic steel are found to be due to large carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides. The time for a brittle crack to propagate in metal depends on the grain size, the elastic modulus and the density.
