- Abstract
This article is a literature review on the therapeutic approaches to oroantral fistula, an abnormal communication between the maxillary sinus and the oral cavity. Oroantral fistula can occur during the extraction of upper molars and premolars, due to the anatomical proximity to the maxillary sinus. Other causes include tuberosity fracture, implant displacement into the maxillary sinus, trauma, flap necrosis, and complications of the Caldwell-Luc procedure. The ideal treatment depends on the size of the communication, time of diagnosis, and presence of infection in the region. 25 articles were found on the PubMed platform, of which 12 were selected for review. Various surgical techniques have been described in the literature to treat oroantral fistula, such as vestibular flap, buccal flap, palatal flap, and buccal fat pad.
