- Abstract
We aimed to detect early effects of natural and surgical menopause on proximal aortic stiffness. In this crosssectional study we examined 16 surgical menopausal patient, 21 natural menopause patient and 18 premenopausal patient. We measured the proximal pulse wave velosity of the patients and we compared the groups according to their aortic stiffness. Mean pulse wave velosity of premenopausal patients is 4,62 m/s, surgical menopause patients' 7,05 m/s, natural menopausal patients' 6,05 m/s. After correcting the effects of TG and HDL-C levels on groups mean pulse wave velosity is detected respectively 5,16 m/s, 7,20 m/s, 5,48 m/s; while the difference between natural menopause and premenopause groups loose its statistical significance, the difference between surgical menopause and premenopause keeps its statistical significance. The effect of surgical menopause on arterial stiffness starts earlier than natural menopause. This may cause cardiovascular problems in those patients.
