- Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the perception of size and body shape of 56 elderly women between the age of 60 and 79, practitioners of water aerobics. The participants were divided in three groups according to their Body Mass Index (BMI), Normal (18,5 - 24,9 kg/m²), Overweight (25 - 29,9 kg/m²) and obese (≥30 kg/m²). The percentage frequencies were verified based on the Real and Ideal perception scale via Human silhouettes Drawing scale followed by a comparative analysis between the scale results and the classification of the BMI. It was noted that 37,5% of the participants demonstrated satisfaction with their appearance, once they chose the Real silhouette equal to the Ideal silhouette. The majority of the elderly women (62,5%) selected different Real and Ideal silhouettes, suggesting dissatisfaction regarding their body shape. The body size and shape perception in the sample group of this study seems to approximate from the results found regar ding young women, indicating dissatisfaction with their body image. However, there is necessity of new studies aimed to relate the perception of body shape and size with other variables among women over the age of 60, specially with the level of physical activity and other instruments that analyze body image.
