Verminous appendicitis and its Histopathologic lesions.

- Abstract
Background and purpose: Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix caused by different pathogen agents. The present study is a histopathological study that carried out on the verminous appendicitis in two hospitals in Sari city, Northern Iran during 2005-2009. Materials and methods: In this study all appendectomized samples in two hospitals in Sari town during 5 years. Pathologic slides of the appendices were investigated for the presence of helminths and pathological types. The diagnosis is prepared base on microanatomy of helminthes inside the appendices. Results: Of 2135 appendices that were examined, 31 (1.45%) and 2104 (98.55%) were found to be verminous and inverminous respectively. The parasites that observed were Enterobiusvermicularis (1.40%) and Taenia sp. (0.046%). Twenty three (74.19%) of the cases had inflammation and 8 cases were without inflammation. The verminous appendicitis was found to be more prevalent in age group less than 8 year (4.10%). Conclusion: Our results showthe role of parasitic infections causingappendicitis, but lack of inflammationin some parasitic appendicitisneeds to investigation in future.
