- Abstract
The article presents a study which quantitatively assesses methane emissions in the East Siberian Shelf to predict climatic role of the emission. The study conducted a calculation of the methane emission (flux, F) from shelf water, evaluation of the distribution of the East Siberian Shelf areas with different emission rates, and prediction of emission increase after 50 years. Results show an increase in emission intensity in most of the areas of the shelf and increased annual methane emission. The study says that rapid methane release from destructed gas hydrate deposits increases the potential of a climate catastrophe. It adds that the transition of frozen rocks into the thawed state and the transition from the gas-impermeable to the gas-conductive state must occur in a spasmodic manner.
