Recent Changes in Criteria for Selecting the Level of Amputation of the Leg.
- Authors
Herman, Bernard E.; Peirce II, E. Converse
- Abstract
The article discusses the development on the criteria for selecting the level of amputation of the leg in the U.S. Below-knee amputation, eventually, has been accepted due to the improvement in below-knee prosthesis, antibiotics, surgical techniques and surgical supportive measures. In addition, to avoid necrosis in muscles, it was suggested that surgeons should consider the anterior crural musculature when making final determination of level of amputation.
