- Abstract
Introduction: Sepsis and septic shock are one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Rapid and precise diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic therapy is necessary to reduce mortality and morbidity in patients with sepsis. Though several biomarkers and scoring systems have been evaluated, prognostic markers to quickly and precisely establish the diagnosis or prognosis of patients with sepsis and septic shock are yet to be evaluated. Red cell distribution width (RDW) is measure of erythrocyte size variability and heterogenicity RDW is a newly identified risk marker that has been reported in various studies to be a predictor for morbidity and mortality in sepsis and septic shock. The aim of the study is to determine the values red cell distribution width in patient with sepsis and septic shock. Methodology: This study was a descriptive study including 100 patients who satisfy the Inclusion and exclusion criteria at various medical college tertiary hospital centres, Karnataka. Result: In our study majority were in the age group 61-70yr (38.0%). 27% patients were in age group of 51-60yr, 19% were in age group of 41-50 yr., 13% were in age group of 30-40yr. and 3% were in age group 26-30yr.
