- Authors
STROUD, BARRY
- Abstract
The article presents the author's views regarding Howard Wettstein's book, "The Magic Prism: An Essay in the Philosophy of Language." He appreciates Wettstein's explanation on the issues and doctrines of direct reference principle. He notes that Wettstein's aim in creating the book is to reject the widespread assumption that a speaker refers to an object by his words only if he has some individuating knowledge or belief or conception, through which he can focus on that particular subject. He argues that such proposition deviates from the magic that is performed by the human thought.
