- Authors

- Abstract
The article presents information on John Churchill and Piercy Kirke: fresh light on the early careers of two army officers. Biographers of John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), assert that in the year following his first commission as an ensign in the First Foot Guards, 14 September 1667, he went to Tangier as a volunteer and served with the then governor the Earl of Peterborough's Regiment (the First or Old Tangier Regiment of Foot). Unfortunately the lack of a paybook for Allin's flagship the Resolution, which he commanded from 17 July 1669 to 6 November 1670, means that one has no knowledge of the precise capacity in which John Churchill was serving.
