- Abstract
The article reveals that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) received reports that some laboratory workers in Virginia were infected with the Vaccinia virus (VACV). It discusses the symptoms and stages of infection which the patients undergo and it also presents the safety measures that must be taken to prevent infection. This includes receiving smallpox vaccination as recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for laboratory workers who handle non-highly attenuated VACV strains or other orthopoxviruses.
