- Title
"Shuffling Out of My Vulgar Origins": The Masculinist-Elitist Language of Saul Bellow's Fiction.
- Authors
Goldman, Liela H.
- Abstract
The article examines author Saul Bellow's attempted resolution of his dilemma as an ethnic writer who wishes to transcend the perceived linguistic limitations of his ethnic tongue, yet contribute from that very source a richness of expression that will help to overcome aridity in the mainstream language. It presents Bellow's comment on his earlier writings. The author claims that there is an obvious change in Bellow's writing beginning with "Augie March." Some authors have commented upon Bellow's use of Yiddish literary conventions.
