- Abstract
The article focuses on existence of biwa hoshi, historical Japanese musicians, during thirteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries. It discusses the history and performance practices of the biwa hoshi. It highlights the comparison of shape, appearance and performance of biwa with Western lute. It also reports on heikyoku, specialized music performed by biwa hoshi with various tales of the Genpei War.
