- Abstract
Eleven species in six genera of lumbricid earthworms are recorded from the 11,895 ha Nepisiguit Protected Natural Area (NE PNA), New Brunswick, Canada, the result of survey of 59 sites in the NE PNA in 2015-16. Eight sites were also surveyed in adjacent Mount Carleton Provincial Park. Ten of the species encountered are considered European introductions. Although recent molecular genetic evidence suggests Bimastos (Dendrodrilus) rubidus is endemic to North America, the status of this species as native or introduced to Maritime Canada remains uncertain. Lumbricus rubellus, Aporrectodea rosea, Aporrectodea tuberculata, and Bimastos (Dendrodrilus) rubidus, in descending order, were the species most widespread in the NE PNA. Least common among the species encountered were Lumbricus terrestris, Lumbricus castaneus, and Octolasion cyaneum. The greatest earthworm abundance and diversity in the NE PNA appears to be associated with river and stream shorelines and with human-disturbed habitats. We suggest that bait discards from recreational fishing is the most significant means of earthworm introduction to the NE PNA.
